Humane Society Building Photo

Our History

The Wiregrass Humane Society has been an organization for decades, but it began a resurgence in the early 1990s. Before the current building, the animals were housed in a mobile home. Gradually dog runs were built and improved, and after a capital contributions drive, the building that houses our current animals was completed in 2000. The building would not be possible without the generosity of the citizens of the Wiregrass and the City of Dothan giving WHS a fifty-year lease of the land.

The WHS is also a non-profit public service organization dedicated to relieving animal suffering. Except for our shelter employees, all of the work of the WHS is done by volunteers. We receive no federal, state, or local funding, so we rely solely on private donations from kind supporters within our community.
